The Columbus Clippers (37-46) gave up 6 runs in the fourth inning on their way to a 9-4 loss to the Toledo Mud Hens (47-37) on Tuesday at Huntington Park. Kyle Nelson & Danny Young were put to task in the 4th as Toledo scored six runs in the 4th alone. Kyle Nelson, who is now 0-1, was in his first appearance since July 8th against Indianapolis where he gave up 5 runs in ⅓ of an inning. Tuesday against the Mud Hens Nelson gave up 1 run, walked three batters and allowed a single without recording an out. 9 of Nelsons 14 pitches were balls. Young was brought in to replace Nelson and Young gave up four consecutive hits and allowed 2 runs before the inning ended.
Trenton Brooks and Nolan Jones both hit home runs for the Clippers. Trenton Brooks hit a two-run homer scoring Ryan Lavarnway. (Lavarnway is back from the "Temporary Inactive List" after playing in the Summer Olympics for Israel.) That sent the Clippers into the 4th inning with a 2-1 lead. Jones hit a hard shot to right center for a solo home run in the 4th. In the 5th Daniel Johnson doubled and scored Alex Call giving the Clippers 4 runs, but that would be the last time Clippers would score.
Renato Nunez for the Mud Hens added the final blow to the Clippers in the 9th when he connected on a two-run homer that pushed the lead to 9-4.
Catcher Ryan Lavarnway was back from the Temporary Inactive List after playing in the Summer Olympics for Israel. He finished he Olympics with a .286 average (4-14), two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored. Israel placed fifth out of six teams.
